Places to Stay in Canada, Caribbean, and USA
Table of Contents
When planning upcoming romantic getaways, treat your partner to one of these romantic hotels—or a romantic B&B, luxury yurt, or romantic resort. Our choices include a romantic inn with its own boutique winery, a luxury yurt in the middle of a cidery, and a romantic villa with private cave dining.
I asked a select group of travel experts for advice, and they delivered some amazing romantic hotels.
These romantic places to stay are sprinkled throughout North America, so they are sorted into Canadian, Caribbean, and United States collections. Share recommendations for your favorite couples hotels in the comments below.
Romantic Places to Stay in Canada
Merridale Cidery, British Columbia
Visit Merridale for the fresh cider but stay for the amazing luxury yurt. You must see the luxury yurt at Merridale to believe it. Better yet, book the yurt for a memorable romantic escape. The luxury inside is matched by beautiful scenery outside. Sit in the big red Adirondacks on your private deck, sip on Merridale’s delicious cider, and savor the lovely views of the pond and woods.
Villa Eyrie, British Columbia
This incredible view. A private deck. A comfortable and romantic room. Plush robes and luxury everywhere you turn. Request a bottle of champagne and there may be no more romantic place in the world than the Villa Eyrie Resort on Vancouver Island.
Romantic Caribbean Hotels
The Caves, Jamaica
Canada does not have a monopoly on romantic hotels and romantic resorts in North America. For our 10th anniversary, we enjoyed special time on our private balcony at The Caves in Negril, Jamaica. The staff is among the friendliest in the world and lovingly provide tropical drinks, fresh local food, and adventure/relaxation services and suggestions as requested. McCool Travel tip: for one of the most romantic dining spots in the world, reserve the private cave dining area.
Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun All Inclusive Spa Resort, Mexico
Savor astounding water colors from your private patio or from several places throughout the phenomenal property of Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun. With an enviable position on the elbow of Cancun’s Hotel Zone, this luxury resort features one of the few original-style Cancun beaches, protected from strong wave action by Isla Mujeres and from harassing public vendors. Enjoy one of Latin America’s largest and best spa facilities featuring the magnificent 10-step hydrotherapy circuit. Several on-property dining options at this luxury all-inclusive resort property include a five-star French restaurant, Le Basilic, headed by one of Mexico’s top-rated female chefs. McCool Travel tip: for a romantic adventure, rent a two-seater SeaDoo watercraft from the beach hut by the pool.
Playa Viva, Mexico (by Anne and Mike Howard, HoneyTrek)
Sustainable resorts are getting sexier all the time, but a place that really makes us warm and fuzzy? Playa Viva in Juluchuca is one of the most romantic hotels in Mexico . Thinking beyond “green,” they’ve built a 12-room regenerative resort that makes the land and community stronger, and guests swoon in the process. Take a romantic couples yoga workshop overlooking the ocean, help release baby turtles at their wildlife preserve, and ride a 4×4 vehicle to a coffee plantation for a farm-to-table lunch with the farmers themselves.
Jade Mountain, St. Lucia (by Tiffany Dowd, Luxe Tiffany)
For a romantic escape, head to Jade Mountain Resort in Saint Lucia, one of the most romantic Caribbean resorts. Each of the sanctuaries have no fourth wall, giving jaw dropping open-air views of the iconic Piton mountains—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Luxuriate by your private infinity pool while your major domo butler caters to your every whim.
Romantic Places to Stay in USA
Omni Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Montelucia, Arizona
This Mediterranean-themed resort in Phoenix Arizona will make your honey swoon. The Omni Montelucia has countless opportunities to discover or rediscover romance—including the luxurious rooms with balconies, oversized bathtubs and showers (for two people!), plush robes, rejuvenating spa, adults-only pool, fire pit areas, enticing views, and relaxed elegant dining. McCool Travel tip: treat your honey and yourself to the Chef’s Tapas Menu at Prado and let Chef Oscar and Chef Andrew take you on a Spanish culinary journey with a Sonoran twist.
The Phoenician, Arizona
Another magnificent Valley of the Sun resort—Phoenix does resorts really well!—is The Phoenician, located on the other side of Camelback Mountain from the above Omni Montelucia. The brand new The Phoenician Spa is less than two years old, the redesigned golf course is newer than that, and everything at The Phoenician is either new (like the magnificent fitness facility) or modernized. Everything that is, except for the Mother-of-Pearl pool (shown below) with hand-laid tiles and the epitome of relaxed luxury. McCool Travel tip: splurge on the The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician, the only AAA five diamond and Forbes five star lodging in the Phoenix area. Your partner is worth it!
Elk Cove Inn & Spa, California
You cannot beat the spectacular setting of Elk Cove Inn & Spa along the Mendocino coast. Overlooking the relatively private beach of Greenwood Creek State Park, Elk Cove Inn is a perfect place to celebrate an anniversary or birthday—as most guests were doing during our recent stay.
And the food at Elk Cove is phenomenal. The married team serving as inn hosts are also the chef and sommelier and the property grounds are full of herbs, plants, and ingredients (eggs, honey, and small animals) used in every meal. Between meals, savor the onsite spa for a massage or explore the ruggedly gorgeous black sand beach.
McCool Travel tip: The WaveWatcher cottage room (shown here) has a private deck space, extraordinary views, jacuzzi tub, fireplace, and remarkable shower.
Here are the best Elk Cove Inn & Spa rates.
Little River Inn, California
Just 14 miles north from Elk Cove Inn, and a stunning coastal scenic drive, is another romantic resort with a spectacular setting. At Little River Inn, they say, “Welcome to the Edge of the World” and you will find endless opportunities to do explore the world’s edges.
It is a short walk on a forest path trail to Van Damme State Park beach. And in the other direction, the Blowhole Trail beckons a primeval forest. On property, enjoy the sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and California coastline from your room, balcony, or several strategic benches (find your own special spot).
All Little River Inn rooms face the water and some have fireplaces (gas or wood), balconies, and deep tubs (very romantic!).
McCool Travel tip: for an ultimate romantic experience, book Coomb’s Cottage—a detached unit with a hot tub on the deck and unbeatable views of the Pacific Ocean steps away. Make sure to have on hand a bottle of local Mendocino County wine!

Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay, California (by Pam Rossi, Always5Star)
An Always5Star recommendation for a “fun” romantic getaway would include a luxury resort offering 5-star luxury room, epic views, soaking tubs, and unlimited champagne! The Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay Club Lounge room in California meets that criteria and much more. Cheers!
Here are the best Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay rates.
Boca Resort, Florida
One of the most romantic Florida resorts is the classic, Art Deco-era Boca Resort. Your biggest decision might be whether to stay at the Boca Resort or the Boca Beach Club. Boca Resort retains Art Deco luxury with modern amenities (think Great Gatsby) while the Boca Beach Club offers the oceanfront romance.
McCool Travel tips: At Boca Resort, opt for a one bedroom suite with a balcony overlooking the croquet field. At Boca Beach Club, splurge on the Sea Level Experience which includes a personal attendant, hand and foot massage, and an oversized comfortable daybed on the beach. Reserve a window table at The Blue and watch sunset, the twinkling lights, or an evening storm from the 27th floor.
Epicurean Hotel, Florida
When a hotel has its own cooking theater, you know you are in for some culinary fabulousness. Add to that their on-site wine store, chocolate shop, spa, rooftop lounge, and proximity to several excellent restaurants; Epicurean Hotel in Tampa Florida is a romantic getaway to feed your soul and tummy. For a true love bird experience, buy a bottle of wine downstairs (or have one set up when you arrive), order room service, and retreat to your corner junior suite oasis.
Please see the McCool Travel review of Epicurean Hotel.
Four Seasons Lanai, Hawaii (by Johnny Jet)
You cannot get more romantic than Hawaii—especially the Four Seasons Lanai! The weather is nice and warm all year round and it is especially nice to be there in January. Lanai is more remote than the other islands—with limited choices—but that makes it an even more romantic experience.

Inn by the Sea, Maine (by Dana Freeman)
What is more romantic? Cozying up with your significant other in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine or watching the sunset from your private deck? Perhaps it is a bubble bath in a gigantic soaking tub. Luckily at the romantic Inn by the Sea you do not have to choose. The spacious Cove Suites have it all. Top off your weekend at this romantic Maine hotel with dinner at the Sea Glass Restaurant or couples massage in the spa.

The Ivy Hotel Baltimore, Maryland
The staff of The Ivy lays on the charm before and during your stay at this romantic Baltimore hotel. Quite appropriate since Baltimore is known as Charm City. They want to know if you will celebrate a special event, meet your car when you arrive, greet you in the lobby with champagne, and arrange your romantic hotel room with local snacks or drinks. The refined afternoon tea service is a chance to be pampered on your romantic escape.
Fairview Inn, Mississippi
Stroll the beautifully maintained garden and gorgeous grounds of Fairview Inn in Jackson Mississippi and pick your favorite spot. We love sitting under one of the magnificent trees (live oak or magnolia) with our morning tea or evening wine. Book the French Suite at Fairview Inn and enjoy an oversized suite room (with fireplace) and luxurious bathroom—including a jacuzzi tub, bidet, and spacious luxury shower.
The Roost, Mississippi
See why The Roost was named by Architectural Digest as one of the most beautiful new hotels in the southern United States. I love how The Roost owners use reclaimed wood, oyster shell walls, and things like a 200 year old tub. When you do leave your romantic home away from home, walk a few blocks and enjoy magnificent southern oak trees, quaint shops, and hidden gem restaurants—like Vestige, Charred, and Maison de Lu.
The Sherman Lodge, Montana
The newest place to stay in Kalispell also offers a memorable romantic getaway in western Montana. Open since June 2020, The Sherman Lodge has only five rooms, with romantic oversized walk-in showers and other enviable amenities. Curl up in the cozy living room with a bottle of wine or two, prepare morning-after breakfast in the luxury kitchen, or share a six pack from the across-the-street craft brewery under the stars on the rooftop. NOTE: couples did all of them (and more!) during my stay.

Sanderling Resort, North Carolina
For a relaxed luxury couples getaway, we love the Sanderling Resort‘s sea-to-sound location in The Outer Banks barrier islands of North Carolina. OBX is very narrow at Sanderling, which means you can watch sunrise on the beach and sunset over the sound (both are just steps from your room) with plenty of time for spa treatments or activities in between. Choose a Beach House or South Inn for optimal enjoyment.

Mäntylä (Mantyla), Pennsylvania
For a very special occasion or to cross a big something off your travel wish list, how about an overnight in a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright? Mäntylä was the former Lindholm residence in northern Minnesota for nearly 50 years and was deconstructed, transported, and rebuilt at Polymath Park in Laurel Highlands, Pennsylvania. Mantyla—Mäntylä is Finnish for pine forest—opened for overnight guests in mid May 2019, so stay in Mantyla soon and have some bragging rights at upcoming networking functions. But what happens in Mäntylä stays in Mäntylä as when you stay there, you are the only guests in the entire house.
McCool Travel tips: While at Polymath Park, tour several Frank Lloyd Wright inspired properties and even have dinner in TreeTops. Polymath Park is only 30 minutes from Fallingwater.

Inn at Vaucluse Spring, Virginia
Find a sweet romantic Virginia getaway head to The Inn at Vaucluse Spring, nestled near the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah Valley. The main house still retains charming elements from the 1780s, but for seclusion book one of the cabins. My favorite romantic place is the Mill House—a two story cottage with a fireplace, jacuzzi tub, and separate sitting and bedroom areas.
The George Washington Hotel, Virginia
Only 13 miles from Inn at Vaucluse Spring, The George Washington Hotel in Winchester, Virginia offers a different romantic getaway experience. The historic hotel has an elegant saltwater pool (with pillars and a Roman statue) and a raised hot tub. Enjoy a relaxing couples’ massage at the Saumaj spa right next to the pool entrance. Old Town Winchester historic pedestrian mall is a short one-block stroll. One romantic dinner option is Violino, featuring fresh pasta made in house and celebration serenades from the chef/owner.
Beliveau Farm, Blacksburg Virginia
For a romantic getaway further south along the Blue Ridge Mountains, how about a luxury boutique property on 165 acres including an award-winning vineyard? Beliveau Farm is fascinating. The owners are a couple who grew up in Canada. The husband is a professor and dean at nearby Virginia Tech, and he built the house! Needless to say there will be wine every afternoon. Take time to explore the grounds as there are plenty of romantic settings. This area has an extensive cave system which means hardly any pesky mosquitoes to distract from any romantic moments.

Jefferson Hotel, Virginia (by Julie McCool, Fun in Fairfax VA)
The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia offers romantic luxury in a Gilded Age beauty perfect for a romantic couples getaway. The downtown location is a great base for exploring Virginia’s cool capital city, but The Jefferson Hotel guest rooms and public spaces are so comfortable you may never want to leave.
Another great Richmond Virginia hotel, just a 3 minute walk from Jefferson Hotel, is Linden Row Inn. The property is a series of seven historic row houses, now elegantly and lovingly restored with modern decor and amenities. Splurge for one of the parlour rooms. Our favorite is #208, with a sit-in bay window.
Ironworks Hotel Beloit, Wisconsin
All Ironworks Hotel Beloit WI rooms have elegant wood walls and countertops, plush robes, and rainfall showers. To turn up the romance, each suite has a fireplace and comfortable sitting area. McCool Travel tip: reserve a suite on the river side.
