Travel to the South Tyrol, Italy – Episode 812

Listen to about travel to South Tyrol, Italy as the Amateur Traveler talks to Lynne Nieman about this lovely location in northern Italy.

Lynne claims, “what I would say is likely gonna be geared more in direction of individuals who do want to be in the outside, or at the very least, you never have to be some kind of hardcore, hiker or ski or some thing like that. But even anyone that just appreciates the fantastic outside appreciates beautiful mountains.”

“The Dolomite peaks are there. And, of program, the Dolomites are also a UNESCO entire world heritage website. There are 9 total Dolomite parks. And I. 6 of them are in the increased Trentino Alto Adige region, perhaps 3 or 4 of individuals that are exclusively in South Tyrol. So it’s a terrific put to take pleasure in the landscape or get out into the landscape, get out into the mountains.”

“There’s lovely, charming villages. There’s loads of castles. If you’re a big metropolis individual, this is not your position, but if you like the little charming towns, some historic sites, and a gorgeous pure landscape, then South Tyrol is for you.”

Lynne begins us in Castelrotto, which we use as a base for viewing the alpine meadow place of Alpe di Siusi. This is a stunning, minimal-influence climbing working experience. It is not like mountaineering the Alta By way of 1, which we talked about not long ago.

She recommends a go to to the Prösels Castle, which sits below the Schlern mountain, or the castle in close proximity to the town of Campo Tures by the Austrian border.

You can choose a day hike up to some of the mountain huts or hütte in the place, like Pederü Mountain Hut, Sennes Hütte, or Fanes Mountain Hut. You can stay overnight if you e-book in advance or just do a day vacation.

Make a end at the gorgeous Lago di Braies (Lake Braies) with its wonderful inexperienced waters, or quit at the Augustinian abbey of Novacella wherever the monks have been building wine for just about 900 several years. Take a look at the compact village of Santa Maddalena in the wonderful Val di Funes. If you appreciate driving winding mountain streets, Lynne also suggests the drive around Passo Gardena.

If you appreciate the outside, then make a take a look at to South Tyrol in Italy.

Andreas on Journey to Adelaide, Australia – Episode 770

Thanks for getting me back to Adelaide, exactly where I put in 3 months on college student exchange in 1992. Shout-out to Concordia Faculty!

But I do have to weigh in on the Captain Hahn controversy, since I was stunned when you, Chris, explained that he was Danish, not German. Because the name is plainly German.

What happened is that he was born on the island of Sylt, which had semi-autonomy in just the Danish Kingdom and grew to become component of Prussia in 1866 (immediately after Hahn’s demise).
So, it could perfectly have been that he was a Danish citizen, but ethnically and linguistically, he was most likely German (or Prussian). He also sailed on a German ship and took German settlers to South Australia.

Just before the time of nation states, I usually find it a little bit difficult to say that an individual was of this or that citizenship. Especially so when it comes to multi-ethnic empires or, like in the scenario of Germany, to countries that merely didn’t exist at the time. (Germany as a country point out was only recognized in 1871, following Hahn’s loss of life. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean that persons didn’t have a idea of currently being German ahead of, at minimum because the [failed] revolution of 1848.)
And even more so in that fraught region, which gave us the well-known Schleswig-Holstein dilemma.

Right until right now, there is a German minority in Denmark and a Danish minority in Germany, both equally protected by rules and treaties.
I touch on this in my report about a really prolonged practice experience from Germany to Sweden, to close on a travel-relevant observe: https://andreasmoser.blog site/2021/08/30/train-stockholm/
